Obituary

William Hugh Gibbs was born May 23, 1949, to the late Deacon Dalton Gibbs and Sister Alma Gibbs at Still House Hallow Farm in Hume, Virginia. He attended a one-room schoolhouse, Hume Elementary School, and William C. Taylor High School. He attended the Moody Bible Institute and the Washington Bible College. He was honored to receive an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from Eastern Theological Seminary.

He worked at the IGA in Marshall, VA for many years. His hobby was "amateur radio". He would sit down most mornings with his cup of coffee and start his day on his ham radio "rag chewing" up and down the band. He was always busy; never an idle moment. He was an open book. He will be most remembered for his deep booming voice, his love for people, and his sense of humor. Most people would say "Gibbs is going to be Gibbs". It did not matter where he was or who he was around, he was always that same Gibbs.

William Gibbs was a Deacon at Providence Baptist Church at the young age of 20. As a Deacon, he studied to show himself approved, taking classes at Washington Bible College, while working at the IGA. As a Deacon of Providence, you would see him on his knees praying. After heeding the call on his life, he contacted his pastor to share his calling. God had already prepared his pastor's heart. Less than one year after preaching his initial sermon he was catechized and less than a year after that he was called to Pastor the Providence Baptist Church in Orlean, VA in 1981.

Dr. Gibbs was called to Pastor the Antioch Baptist Church on February 26, 1993. He was installed as pastor on his birthday, May 23, 1993. God did great things for Antioch under Pastor Gibbs' guidance. Pastor Gibbs retired on January 31, 2015, after serving for 22 years.

Dr. Gibbs was preceded in death by his parents, Dalton and Alma Gibbs, his brother Dalton Gibbs Jr., and sister Shirley Gibbs. He leaves to cherish his memory his devoted wife of eleven years, Tammie, five children, Jacqeline Gibbs, Cheryl Gibbs, Nikeshia (Charles) Wiggins, Charmista Condon, and Adrian Gibbs. Eleven grandchildren Alaya Burrill, Deja Burrill, Angel Gibbs, Antonio Gibbs, Adrian Gibbs, Amaya Gibbs, Anthony Wiggins, Andre Wiggins, Jeremiah Powell, Savannah King, Josiah Condon and two sisters Alma Tines and Juanita Champ, one Aunt, Martha Gibbs Green, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
