Obituary

Shirley Ann Howard was born on January 28, 1936 in Chantilly, Virginia to James Albert and Bertie Estella Brooks. She went home to be with the Lord on April 11, 2021.

Shirley spent her early years in Chantilly. She accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior at a young age and joined Chantilly Baptist Church. Shirley attended Manassas Regional High School and graduated in 1954. She then graduated from the school's cosmetology program in 1956.

Shirley met the love of her life John R. Howard through a mutual friend. John and Shirley were married in November of 1954 and then settled in Manassas where they raised their family.

After moving to Manassas, Shirley joined First Baptist Church of Manassas, where she and her husband remained devoted members until their passing. Shirley loved serving in her church as an active member of the Senior Choir, Women's Ministry, and Culinary Ministry. She also used her cooking talents to help fundraise for the annual FBC Women's Retreat.

In addition to raising her family and serving in her church, Shirley worked at IBM in Manassas as an analyst until she retired in 1990.

Shirley was a kind and loving woman blessed with many God-given talents including hairstyling, upholstering furniture, and sewing. She enjoyed dressing up and took pride in searching for the perfect jewelry to accessorize each outfit she wore. Like her father, Shirley enjoyed making music and played piano and guitar by ear. She was also known to perform a spirited tune with "spoons," a talent she also shared with her father.

Shirley was most happy when she was surrounded by family and friends and connecting with her loved ones would always put a smile on her face. She was always ready to prepare and serve family meals accompanied by her famous homemade rolls. The highlight of many of her summers was going on family camping trips or taking beach trips to Sandy Point Beach on the Chesapeake Bay. Shirley also cherished her role as grandma to her many grand and great-grandchildren and will be fondly remembered as their loving "Mema."

Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, John R. Howard; parents, James Albert and Bertie Estella Brooks; three sisters, Emma Bell Brooks, Mabel Corine Cooper, and Laura Mae Sutton; three brothers, Bernard Brooks, Thomas Brooks, and Albert Brooks and two dear friends, Betty Alexander and Margaret Davis.

Shirley leaves to cherish her memory her children, Frenchton (Frank, deceased), Dana (Audrey), Don (Pat), Randy (Teresa), Rodney (Renee) and Stacey (Dereke, deceased); her sister, Jamsie Alberta Thomas; 17 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews and a host of family and friends.

The funeral home will be following CDC and Virginia state mandated Covid-19 measures. Temperatures will be taken at the door, masks are required, and social distancing will be practiced.
