A Celebration of Life of
Joan Geneva Benn
1937 - 2020

Joan Geneva Benn, age 83, passed peacefully into the hands of the Lord on Wednesday, July 15th at Colonial Heights Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Colonial Heights, VA. She was born in Falls Church, Virginia on March 21, 1937 to the late Phillip and Bertha Mary Isom. Joan was predeceased by her brother, Deacon Phillip Isom II.
Early in life Joan joined Second Baptist Church in Falls Church, VA, where she was a member of the Golden Echo choir, served on the Usher board and many other church clubs for as long as she was able. She attended the local public schools and graduated from Luther P. Jackson High School. In 1958, she was united in Holy matrimony to the late James E. Benn, Sr.
Joan was a dedicated wife and mother first and foremost. She especially loved her role as Nana. She made friends everywhere she went. In her past time, she loved to cook, crochet, gardening and plant flowers around her home in Sterling. She also enjoyed watching TV, talking on the phone and playing bingo. Her favorite bible verses were Philippians 4:13, Psalms 23 and Psalms 35.
For many years, Joan worked at SAID, Inc., as a Keypunch operator and then later worked at First American Bank, after retiring from the banking industry, she worked at Chantel's Bakery until she could no longer work.
Her memory will be cherished by her devoted family: one daughter, Floretta Tates (Arvene); one son, Jason Benn (Candace); four grandchildren, Chrysten Tates, Shanon Tates, Lanai Benn and Jayda Benn; three great-grandchildren, Saimiya, Mariyah and Kaileigh; two sister-in-laws, Barbara McBath of Knoxville, Tennessee and Carolyn Dixon (Eddie), of Dayton, Ohio; god-daughter, Leslie Dobson and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
She will be missed dearly and forever in our hearts. We will never forget her tenacity, wit, charm, grace and undying love.
