Reverend James Richard Green was born in the Bronx, New York, on July 21, 1940, to James Green and Susan Grace Carter. He was raised by his Uncle Roy and Aunt Lula Carter of Mount Union, Pennsylvania. He graduated from Captain Jack High School in Mt. Union. He attended Juniata College in Huntingdon, Pennsylvania, before deciding to enlist in the United States Marine Corps in 1960.

During his military career, he was given numerous citations and awards, such as the Vietnam Campaign medal, Presidential Unit Citation and Meritorious Unit Commendation, just to name a few. He served as the presidential maintenance chief of HMX-1 for 4 years.

After his tour in Vietnam, he returned to the states where he met the love of his life. He was introduced to his wife, Louise by his friend, Charles. After three months, they were married and now, 52 years later she remains the love of his life.

Reverend Green was the Pastor of Little Union Baptist Church from 2002-2012. Not only did he love teaching God's word, he loved sports, studying the word and laughter. Rev. Green held a BS degree in Management/Human Resources and Social Psychology from Park University in Parkville, Missouri. He also held a Master in Divinity Cum Laude from Virginia Union University.

On July 6, 2021, God called his servant home to eternal rest. He leaves his devoted wife, the Rev. Louise W. Green of Harrisburg, NC and four children: Phyllis Green Hancock (Gary) of Concord, NC, Jeffery Green (Rosiland) of Harker Heights, TX, James R. Green Jr. of Fredericksburg, VA and Kelly L. Jackson, who preceded him in death. He also has 13 grandchildren: LaToshia, Christopher (Lea), Courtney, Karrie, Jasmine S., Jasmine G., Mahlon, Zachary, Tyler, Shawn (Vash-Ty), Jarek ,Sierra, Josiah, and 10 great grandchildren: Leyla, Arianna, Leah, Ariah, Mya, Khalessi, Steven, Audrey, Drew and Noah.
He leaves two brothers and three sisters Leon Green of Fredericksburg, VA, Larry Satterfield (Mattie), Barbara Wells and Patricia Robinson of New York as well as Carol Jackson who preceded him in death. Rev. Green also has two close cousins, James Carter and Lula Mae Carter who also preceded him in death.
