CELEBRATING THE LIFE OF
HENRY L. CLARKE
1935-2020
Henry L. Clarke (referred to by many as "Hank") was born in Creola, Alabama June 28, 1935. He was the son of Joe Lee Clarke who was 21 at his time of birth, and Ethel Mae Bettis who was 17. Henry was born at home at 6am, and he was delivered by the midwife, Clara Washington. He was raised in a Christian manner, and he attended Central High School in Mobile Alabama. His father, Joe, who was a farmer eventually moved to Asbury Park, NJ where he married Dorothy Clarke. Henry joined them at a young age.
On January 25, 1951, Henry entered the military. He proudly served until November 26, 1953. Receiving an Honorable Discharge, he returned to Asbury Park, NJ, where he lived and wedded his sweetheart who became Florence Clarke. This union dissolved, and he later moved to the Washington DC/Maryland area where he managed several grocery stores. On Dec. 26, 1970, he married Frances Anne Green from Durham, NC. From this union was born one son, Marcel Jamar Clarke.
Henry was a hard worker; he eventually owned a seafood store in Landover, MD, and in the late 80's he relocated to Philadelphia, PA where he progressed from managing grocery stores to owning his own. He became a very influential figure in the business. Henry was affiliated with a number of Philadelphia Eagles football players during that period in time and was known for wearing his favorite football team's cap all the way until the end!
Henry eventually returned to Maryland where he accepted a variety of jobs in various industries. He demonstrated a relentless work ethic, and he never let life get him down. His entrepreneurial spirit was passed on to his son (who has gone on to create a multitude of businesses), and his granddaughter, Marshay Clarke( who recently launched her own online venture as well). Henry Clarke's actions; therefore, spawned a family generation of entrepreneurs and his legacy is now well established.
He passed this life the morning of July 21, 2020 at Sinai Hospital, Baltimore, Md. He is survived by his son, Marcel Jamar Clarke, three grandchildren, (Marshay Alexis Clarke, Jordyn Fay Clarke, Bryce Roman Clarke), two brothers,( Eddie Westry, James Clarke), one sister (Maxine Westry Grisett) and a host of relatives and friends! He was well loved and will be well missed!
