Obituary for Garland W. Gee, Jr.

January 23, 1944 - September 11, 2018
Manassas, Virginia | Age 74

Garland Wadsworth Gee Jr. peacefully entered his eternal rest on September 11, 2018 in his home surrounded by his wife, children and immediate loved ones after a strong and valiant battle against cancer.

Garland was born on January 23, 1944 to the late Garland Sr. and Lucille Gee and was the youngest of five children. He is preceded in death by his four siblings; Vietta Williams, Lutricia Garner, William Gee, and Dorothy Rose. Garland spent his childhood in Arlington, VA and moved to Manassas, VA in 1963 to attend school. He attended and graduated from Jennie Dean School; where he would meet his loving and devoted bride Delores Washington.

Garland joined First Mt. Zion Baptist Church of Dumfries, VA under the pastorship of the late Reverend A.T. Gaskins in the late 1960's and attended until his death. It was at First Mount Zion that Garland and Delores were married on August 19, 1967. They were married for 51 years and from their union three children were born: Darland (Tina) Pressley, Garland W. Gee III (Dino) and Raymond L. Gee. Throughout the years Garland and Delores hosted and cared for a number of children including Elaine Greenhow Jenkins and Diana Greenhow Newman.

Garland enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in June 1965 and proudly served his country with honor and distinction until his honorable discharge in 1972. During his tour of duty with the Marine Corps he deployed to Vietnam and earned many awards: Combat Action, Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with 1 star, Vietnam Campaign Metal, Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry with palm, Vietnamese Service Medal with stars.

After his discharge from the USMC, Garland continued to work as a hard-working and dependable man that rarely took a day off or missed work. He was employed by the D.C. Corrections Department for ten years and then later worked for IBM Security. He retired from the work force in 2018 from the Lockheed Martin Team at NOVEC after over 20 years of dedicated service.

Garland loved fast cars and fancy trucks, fishing and football. In addition he was known as a master storyteller. He was known throughout the years for his charm and innate ability to regale any and everyone with his stories. He would claim that his cars and trucks could outrun a typhoon wave or the fish he caught were as big as Shamu.

Garland was a very endearing man with a big caring heart and his love for his family was unmeasurable. He would give everyone in his family nicknames as terms of endearment; like Bobo, Deenie, My Buddy, Phe and Pickles just to name a few.

Garland leaves behind a dedicated family unit. His wife Delores, his daughter Tina (Ron), of Stafford, VA and his two sons, Dino (Dawn), of Front Royal, VA and Raymond (Shavon) of Culpeper, VA; his 12 grandchildren, Brittany (Carlos), De'Marco, Lawrence , Aja, Keshanna, Harmony, Adrianna, Destyni, Téa, Rhys, Kyla and Summer; and his two great grandchildren, Carlos III (Charlie) and Milo. He also leaves behind a special nephew that assisted with his care, Henry (Snobe) Greenhow, and a special niece, Vietta Williams, that helped with his care in the evenings or anytime needed and kept him company through the night. Furthermore he leaves behind one sister-in-law: Shirley Walker and two brothers-in-law: Jackie Washington (Carolyn) and Preston Washington (Glenda).

The family would like to send a sincere thank you to neighbor Edith Moore who kept Garland company during the day, as well as the wonderful staff that assisted Garland with his treatment and care: Virginia Cancer Specialists of Gainesville, VA, Martinsburg VA Medical Center, Caring Angels, Manassas Family Medicine, Capital Caring Homestead Senior Care.
