Obituary

Echoing another great African American preacher, "make it short," Reverend Cora S. Brooks implored as she instructed her family how to write her final tribute.

Cora Smith Brooks was born on March 5, 1940, in Snow Hill, NC, to Ruth Daniels and Sylvester Lane. She departed this life on Monday, November 2, 2020, after battling lung cancer.

Cora's mission as an obedient servant of God led her to evangelize, educate, equip and encourage disciples to advance the Kingdom of Jesus Christ. Cora was a devoted minister and active member of Star of Bethlehem Baptist Church, Triangle, VA. She was a member of the Adult Choir where she sang tenor. She truly loved her positions as Superintendent of Sunday School, Sunday School teacher and her roles as President and Vice President, respectively of the Golden Members' Ministry. After relocating to Charlotte, NC, in 2016, Cora served as a minister of the Second Calvary Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor Ralph McCormick.

Cora was very passionate about furthering her education. She was a 1962 honors graduate of J.T. Barber High School in New Bern NC. She pursued her higher education at Lenoir Community College (Licensed Practical Nursing), Craven Community College (Associate Degree in Nursing – Honor Graduate), Triangle Bible Institute (Bachelor Degree in Christian Education, Master Degree in Ministry and Master Degree in Divinity – Summa Cum Laude for each degree).

Serving others in her role as a nurse was Cora's other passion. As a registered nurse for over 45 years, Cora lovingly provided care in various roles including being the first African American Head Nurse at Craven County Hospital. She retired after working for 10 years as a Certified Hospice and Palliative Nurse (CHPN). She received several recognitions, including Who's Who in American Junior College, 1976 and Cambridge's Who's Who in 2004.

Cora enjoyed life to the fullest. She was the eternal matriarch who enjoyed being with her family. She loved to travel, go on cruises and had a flare for shopping and fashion. She was known for her sharp church attire and stylish hats.

Cora leaves to cherish her memory: Daughter, Robin Price (Gilbert) and Son, Reginald Harvey; Grandchildren, Shontina Walker (Damian), Shenita Brower and Mia Harvey; Great-grandchildren, Alphonso Brower, Jr., Brianna Brower, D'Shea Price-Bright, Taylor Brower and Paris Smith; Great-great grandchildren, Kelani Penny, Raelyn Brower and Alphonso Brower, III (Trey); Aunt, Beulah Hill; Cousins, Stephanie Hill, David Hill (Denise), Jeffrica Chinedu (Kenny) Solomon Hill and her dear friend Walter Price.

Cora's favorite scripture: Proverbs 3:5-6, "Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge Him and He shall direct thy paths."
