Alma Bernadine Taylor was born in Crenshaw, Mississippi, the daughter of John Henry and Pearl Matthews Taylor. She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters and three brothers.
At an early age she accepted Christ and united with Holly Groove Baptist Church in Crenshaw. She received early education in Crenshaw, Mississippi and Memphis, Tennessee and earned the Bachelors and Masters degrees from Fisk University, Nashville, Tennessee. She also did considerable post graduate studies.
She married Perkins S. Jones Sr. of Rose Hill, Mississippi. To this union two children were born – Perkins Jr. and Linda Faith. Perkins Sr. preceded her in death.
Alma traveled extensively, enjoyed teaching and was an educator for more than 40 years. Her teaching career was in the public schools of Cumberland, Maryland and a Demonstration Teacher in the Laboratory schools of Tuskegee Institute and Alcorn A&M College. She spent more than 20 years as a Teacher and Reading Specialist at Washington Middle School in Springfield, IL. She worked two terms as a Commissioner of the Education Council.
After retirement she gave freely of herself, quietly volunteering: Literacy Tutor at Lawrence Education Center; St. Johns Hospital Interfaith Caregiver; "Meals on Wheels"; A.A.R.P. Lobbyist; S.I.U. School of Medicine Geriatric Mentor and Literacy Tutor in Woodbridge, VA.
She was a member of Zion Baptist Church prior to relocating to Woodbridge, VA where she united with First Mt. Zion Baptist Church. Life member of N.A.A.C.P. and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority; A founding member of the local Springfield, IL chapters of United Negro College Fund and A.K.A. Sorority and a member of Springfield Urban League.
To cherish her memory are: daughter, Dr. Linda F. Jones-Turner (C.A.) Woodbridge, VA; son Dr. Perkins S. Jones Jr. (Sheila), Dyer, IN; step granddaughter Kelisha Turner-Taylor (William) two great- grandchildren Amarria and Liam, Stafford, VA; nieces Marva Taylor Salaam, Clayton, Al; Cecilia Taylor, Chicago, IL; nephews Byron P. Taylor(Georgia) Long Beach CA.; Kermit B. Taylor (Joyce) Calumet Park, IL; Kermit J. Taylor (Bernestine) Los Angeles, CA.; several great nieces and nephews, cousins and cherished friends.
